PostSubject: Re: Gambit (IC)   Gambit (IC) - Page 7 EmptyMon Nov 24, 2014 11:36 pm

When Whitefire found that she was trapped, all of Hell seemed to break loose. Good thing she was in a box when it happened, too.

Back pressed against the invisible wall, her breath came quickly. She was scared. Terrible memories were flooding her and she couldn't think. "N- no..." Her hands clenched and light filled the box....showing just how small it was.

She let out a screeching snarl and a wave of light exploded around her, but was contained inside the box. She felt she couldn't breath. No. This could not be happening.

Cages and testing and waiting....waiting for years. Those years of torture, the ones she had blocked out, were now evident by the scared look in her eyes.

The entity did not see fit to show itself, instead another peal of laughter filtered through the air. This time it was a loud laugh, and with it came a light rain from the ominous clouds above.

The sound of thunder.

Without warning, a mental dagger attempted to penetrate everyone's mind.

This presence certainly is starting to bug m- Nuke's thoughts were interrupted by the mental assault. He was well aware that he didn't have much in the way of straight mental barriers, however he did have one potent way of dealing with attackers. He took all the data he had been gathering on their surroundings, the exact position of the subatomic particles, the neutrinos flying through them every second, the paths of energy transferring forms as it flowed throughout nature, all of it. He gathered this data up and used it to push against the dagger, attempting to overwhelm it and whatever was using it with more data then could be imagined.

Zal-Tek roared aloud. A red energy materialized around him, and he concentrated. Lies. He created a wall of them, clever ones, like a decoy, and a wall of obvious ones to be sifted through, almost impossible to avoid. There was no possible way he was going to let someone do this to him. He hadn't lost a battle like this in many, many years. This was something he was good at. He snarled, closing his eyes so he could concentrate better. This could be more difficult than he expected, but of course he still had the brute force method to try.

If the entity wanted to know any sort of information, it might have been surprised that there was nothing to read from Whitefire beside absolute anger. In a matter of seconds, the white cat had gone from frightened to vehement. No one was allowed to cage her. No one was allowed to do anything to her with out consent.

She snarled again, blazing in an angry orange light, which continued to darken, almost red now.

The Presence could be felt hovering above the pit like some enormous ethereal jellyfish, its tendrils touching each creature's mind.

It sank up Zal-Tek's lies like a sponge, remaining a moment longer and then leaving Zal-Tek completely. The dagger retreated, as if it had never been.

It touched lightly on Whitefire's anger, recoiling for an instant and then coming back with a numbing strike filled with reproach. After a moment, it lost interest and moved away from her too.

When it touched Dee, the black-clad figure didn't react with any sort of violence. He, somewhat to his own surprise, let the Presence in with nothing but a faint question. He had nothing to hide and very little to fear. It did not answer him, instead retreating with a speed unparalleled.

The Presence focused on Nuke, digging through the vast amount of information in an attempt to get deeper into his mind. This process was not exactly painless either.

Nuke could feel the presence sifting through his mind. He continued to spam it with countless bits and pieces of data, burying himself under an ever growing pile of trivial facts. He then closed off the rest of his mind with all his willpower, and cleared his mind.

Zal-Tek snarled. He supposed that was technically a win, but... While the being had retreated, it had done so only after it had proven it could have won. Not just won, but absolutely destroyed him. But why? Did that mean it was friendly? He doubted it, given that he was still trapped. So, then, what did it want?

Whitefire's hissing was suddenly cut short and she fell into somewhat of a submissive state. When the entity had searched through her mind, she'd felt it's reproach strongly.....Even the enemy knows hate is corrosive...she thought quietly.

The Presence didn't seem the least bit concerned with the amount of information it was sifting through, despite the fact that uploading this amount of data into any mortal being would cause its head to explode. The Presence seemed almost eager to read through everything Nuke sent it, and continued on.

The storm continued to worsen, and it rained harder. The two ponds within the pit began to overflow, as the waterfalls had resumed their pouring in the torrent. The Presence appeared to be causing the storm as a side effect of whatever it was doing with Nuke.

It was then that the Presence encountered the wall Nuke and thrown up mentally, having sifted through the information in record time. It prodded at the wall, attempting to break it.

Nuke felt the presence prodding his wall. He kept it up and calmed his mind, allowing the data to disappear and focusing the excess attention into holding the wall up.

The Presence didn't seem to like that all the interesting information was dissipating. It redoubled its efforts in breaking up Nuke's mental wall. Meanwhile, the storm pounded on, and there was now a good three inches of water covering the bottom of the pit.

Nuke felt his wall crack, and let it fall away....into an empty space. He calmed his mind completely, making it an empty area. Calm, silent, dead.

The Presence broke in triumphantly, and then--

Emptiness.

It screeched, an audible noise that could be heard by all present in the pit. It writhed above them in the air with a sense of fluidity that was almost palpable. And then it was gone, as if it had never been, the invisible walls dropping as it fled. The rain continued to pour.

The staircase, which had once been just so, was now a waterfall on the verge of spilling over. Still, it was the only way out. Dee might have tried appearing at the top, but found his sense of space was still muddled and that he could not. It seemed teleportation still did not work, at least within the pit.

Nuke was relieved to feel the Presence leave and to have the walls drop. He attempted to teleport, but it still didn't work. That left the stairs, which were covered with a waterfall. Hmmm I think it's time to get rid of all this water he thought. He reached out with his powers and took hold of the water flowing down the staircase. The water divided, and began flowing to either side of the staircase.
He then turned to the others, "Is everyone all right?"

As the Presence left them, Whitefire stood quietly in the rain and in the rising water, blinking slowly. She couldn't fly. Herself and her wings were too wet. Without a word she looked around for a moment, then began walking quietly toward Nuke and the staircase. "Yeah..." she said softly. "I'm fine."

Zal-Tek nodded and started up the steps without a word.  He didn't like this anymore.  The being that had been there moments before was much more powerful than him, or at least better at what it did.  He didn't want to admit how much that scared him.

His other option for leaving was slowly (very slowly) becoming more appealing, but then, at the same time, he had to know everything he could about a being that could defeat him like that so easily.  It was quite the problem.  He wondered if he could even leave in that way, if he wanted -or was forced to.  He shook his head, and continued up the steps.  for now, it didn't matter, he just needed to keep going.

Doctor Dee followed Zal-Tek and Whitefire up the steps, throwing one last look back down into the pit. It now had at least a foot of water covering the bottom, and the rain hadn't let up one bit. The staircase was steep, and there wasn't a convenient handrail or anything to offer support. The steps would have been nearly impossible to climb if not for Nuke's parting of the water. It became apparent that the storm was very localized, in that it only appeared to be raging directly over the pit.

As they left the pit, Nuke pondered their experience The Presence seems to be a very potent telepathic user, not to mention its control of the weather and those forcefields he thought. The worst part is that I can't directly attack it because its not really there. Now if only Cindy or Silvera were here...

Zal-Tek reached the top of the stairs and took a few steps away.  It wasn't raining there, which was only slightly odd to him.  He turned around, moving out of the way so the others could pass him.  It was still raining in the pit, which was interesting, but not surprising.  He summoned a small amount of fire around himself to dry off, then looked around.  "What now?" he asked.

When Whitefire reached the top of the stairs where there was no longer any rain, she sighed. "Well...I'm much wetter than I intended to be today." Instead of shaking herself off again, she waited patiently for the others, unhappy, wet, and cold....all of which she'd rather not be.

Dee reached the top of the staircase shortly after Whitefire and Zal-Tek. He took his hat off for a moment to shake it dry, momentarily disappointed to find the flower crown had come apart and was now nothing more than stems and a few petals. He picked the pieces off carefully and tucked them away in a pocket, and then put his hat back on. Remarkably, Dee was dry within moments.

From the top of the steps, a path could be seen winding away into the woods. The trees were too thick to see where the path went, but it was even and definitely appeared to be the easiest way through.

Nuke, who had somehow managed to already be dry, surveyed the area around them. He fixated his eyes on the path winding away from them, then turned to the others. "Shall we?" he asked, indicating in the direction of the path

Zal-Tek rolled his eyes.  Whatever was guiding them through here had been right there, and now it had left, as if they had to come to it even though they already had.  Still, they might as well keep playing along.  He started down the path without a word, keeping an eye out for danger.

"It looks like we shall," Whitefire joked quietly, but her small smile quickly disappeared. She sighed and shook herself off once before following Nuke slowly. "Everything would be fine if I wasn't so wet," she grumbled, then looked wide-eyed at Zal-Tek and Nuke. "That was not an invitation to use fire or magic on me-"
