Nuke didn't like this. It seemed like a similar situation to the soldiers and the base. But then again Dee seemed familiar with this girl....
He nodded his assent and whispered "Yes, let Dee go and we can wait here"

Whitefire muttered something under her breath as she laid her ears back, looking slightly vexed. "Yeah sure." Again there were a few unintelligible words and she was silent.

Dee nodded once, and then stepped into the water to begin his walk to the island. His feet splashed softly, sending ripples across the pond and breaking the mirror-like surface. The girl continued singing as he approached, still blissfully unaware of his presence. It was only when he set foot on the island itself did her song abruptly stop. In one sharp, quick motion, the girl turned and looked at Dee, her hair whipping out behind her.

"Hello," Dee said quietly, adopting a passive stance. "This is a lovely island you've found here."

The girl stood, eyes locked on Dee. To his confusion, she did not seem at all happy to see him. She backed away slowly, her face pale, and her eyes void of recognition.

"Sarah?" Dee said, concerned. "Are you alright?" He did not sense anything wrong with her, emotionally or physically. All he sensed was fear. "Sarah, it's me." He took a step toward her. Intimidated by his approach, the girl scrambled backwards, fell into the pond behind her, and screamed.

Zal-Tek looked on, skeptical. Something was definately wrong, but he wasn't entirely sure what. He decided that his presence would only make things worse, so he stayed back. He glanced at Nuke and Whitefire for a moment, gauging their responses, then looked back at Dee and Sarah. If only he knew the story between the two of them, maybe he would be able to help, or at least understand what was happening.

Nuke observed as Dee approached the girl and called her name. As he suspected, something was wrong, confirmed by the girl backing away and screaming.
"Oh dear" he muttered

Whitefire's ears pricked and her orange eyes narrowed as the girl screamed , even though Dee seemed to know her.......it didn't look like the girl recognized him. "Uh...Dee..." she started hesitantly.

The girl stood up, dripping wet, her white dress stained green and brown from the scummy pond water. In her hands she held a few sticks and some string, which she had been tying together before Dee had stepped onto the island. Soaked, the string was beginning to fall apart and her carefully crafted creation broke into pieces her hands. She stared at the fragments, tears in her eyes. Now more furious than scared, she looked up at Dee with anger.

"You ruined it!" the girl cried, her voice choked up.

"May I help you fix it?" Dee asked, taking another hesitant step toward the girl. She screamed again and held up an arm, feebly attempting to defend herself from the perceived threat. This action seemed to strike Dee as a physical blow, and his progress forward halted once more. The girl began crying in earnest now, covering her face with her other arm. She was wet, scared, and didn't have anywhere to go.

"Just go away!" she moaned.

This demand, much like the helpless gesture, seemed to strike Dee with the force of a charging rhino. Unmoving, Dee looked at the girl for a long moment, trying to understand. Something was very wrong, that much he knew, but it seemed there wasn't anything he could do. Dee turned away from the girl slowly, intending to do as she asked. Over his shoulder he said quietly and without emotion, "If you wish."

He then limped back the way he had come, leaving the girl standing in the water staring after him.

Zal-Tek looked at Dee, concerned. He didn't seem upset, exactly. At least, that wasn't all. He seemed to be... Hurt. Physically. There was something else odd happening, he decided, but then maybe that was normal for Dee. He frowned.

"Are you alright?" he asked cautiously, perfectly aware that the simple answer was obvious. It was also polite, and he was hoping for a better answer than just 'no.'

Nuke said nothing, and waited for Dee to respond to Zal-Tek's question. This is likely another illusion. A test of some kind for us. Much like it seems the military base was.... he thought, disliking this place more and more.

Whitefire still said nothing.

All she could do was stare.

At the girl.

At Dee.

Her orange eyes were wide with an unreadable expression.

Dee, having calmly returned to the group, albeit at a slower pace than usual, considered Zal-Tek's question. Was he alright? In what sense? Physical, mental, emotional? There were too many ways to interpret the question. The answer was probably no two all three anyhow. He looked down at himself, and gently pressed a gloved hand to his chest. Drawing it away, he examined the black liquid that dripped off his hand and onto the damp earth, staining it.

"This complicates things," Dee said, his voice hollow. Nearly invisible against his dark clothes, the black substance began to seep and drip off of him like watered-down syrup. Shakily, like a great oak tree finally losing the battle against the storm, Dee fell to his knees.

Nuke watched the black liquid come off Dee with alarm. It jumped up another notch or two when he sank to his knees.
"Dee, what's happening? Do you need help?" inquired Nuke with some concern in his voice. He wasn't sure if he could help this being, but it was in his nature to try.

A Sharp pain her chest made Whitefire take in a sudden breath as she watched Dee fall to his knees. "DEE?!" she gasped breathlessly, her emotions quickly overriding her sensible thoughts. Dashing over to him, she knelt beside him, some of her white fur staining black as she did so. "Dee, is there anything I can do?"

Zal-Tek stared at Dee for a moment, surprised and just a little confused. Yep. Something was wrong. He sat down near Dee and dipped his head so he could see better. It was at times like this he wished he had practiced healing people. He could do all sorts of things, almost anything if he tried, but healing was just about what he was worst at naturally. He doubted he could help a being so foreign at all, anyway. So he, like the others, waited for Dee to tell them how they could help, if at all.

Dee shook his head once. He was mildly surprised at the sudden attention he was receiving, and the genuine nature of the concern each of them felt for him.

"I appreciate your concern," he mumbled, feeling weak, "but I do not believe there's anything you can do for me." Carefully he positioned himself so he could sit more comfortably, well aware of the growing stain of black liquid beneath him. He tried to ignore the pain. How odd, he thought. It had been such a long time since this had happened. Funny it should happen now, in this place. "Only Sarah can undo this," he said quietly. "If she does not, then only time will tell."

Nuke looked at the others. "Someone needs to go talk to that girl. Whoever feels they are the best diplomat besides Dee."
He examined the liquid coming from Dee. Strange that all it seemed to take was some rejection from a little girl. So far Dee has been the most interesting of everyone, albeit the most passive

Feeling completely helpless, Whitefire laid her ears back for a moment and leaned forward, hugging Dee softly. "I'll go talk to her," she whispered brokenly, and let go of him and stood, looking over at the girl with an oddly remorseful gaze.

Sighing to herself, the white cat walked through the water to the island quietly, keeping a small smile on her face for the girl. "Hey," Whitefire greeted the girl gently. "Your name is Sarah, right? Mine is Whitefire...or you can just call me kitty if you like...it wouldn't be the first time." The white cat gave a quiet, friendly laugh.

The girl had returned to her seat next to the willow tree and resumed tying sticks together. She was still angry, but she found it difficult to dislike an enormous fluffy cat. She looked up at Whitefire thoughtfully.

"Kitty?" she echoed shyly, her string and sticks momentarily forgotten.

Smiling, Whitefire sat down beside the girl. "So it's going to be kitty I guess..." Reaching out, she fixed Sarah's hair for a moment, and then looked down at what the girl was working on. "What are you making?" Her ears pricked in slight interest.

Quickly the girl hid the sticks behind her back. "It's a secret," she whispered loudly, "and I have to remake it because it fell apart." Some of her anger resurfaced, and her eyes threatened to fill with tears again.

Dee, in the meantime, appeared to have stopped bleeding. Anyone who might have taken this as a good sign would have been mistaken, as Dee had not started feeling any better. The black liquid instead turned into a mist that seemed to fizzle off Dee's body like heat from a snowsuit. There were odd shapes in the mist, mostly that of complex polygons no bigger than a penny. When the mist reached a certain height it disappeared into the air.

Dee watched the mist with what may have seemed like nothing more than passing interest, comparing himself to a fog machine. He was in a lot of pain, but he was not one to complain. He certainly did not act like person who was dying, though he knew it was so.

"If you let me help you....we could fix it faster." Whitefire leaned down with a smile and twitched her whiskers, tickling the girl's face. "Besides, I'm good at keeping secrets. I wouldn't tell anyone." She held out one of her hands, almost expectantly.

The girl hesitated for a long moment, thinking over Whitefire's request. Eventually she sighed, and held out the sticks and string. It appeared was unclear exactly what the girl seemed to be trying to make, but it vaguely looked like the frame of a cube. Parts of it sagged, and the string was still wet from the fall in the pond.

Carefully taking the somewhat waterlogged creation from the girl, Whitefire held it in her hands for a moment, studying it. She looked once more at the girl before quickly setting to work, her thin, gentle fingers soon straightening the frame and tying it firmly, without breaking the fragile string.

Once she was through, the white cat held the cube up for the girl to see. "Now what exactly are you trying to make?

"A cage," Sarah replied simply. Suddenly she shivered as a light breeze blew through the swamp. Still dripping wet, her dress clinging to her small frame, she was cold.

A cage.

Blood.

Testing.

Observers jotting down pointless notes leading to nowhere.

Deathly silence.

Empty rooms.

Years of silence.

              Silence.

                               ..........silent.

Long forgotten memories intruded suddenly upon Whitefire's already nervous thoughts, making her tense in fear. "A cage?" She asked quietly, easily hiding her inner worry for the moment. "Why?"
