Whitefire looked up at him with a pained smile. "No, there isn't any way you can help really. And I'm not sick....though I think the pain might make me pass out."

FYI for ya'll: Whitefire is in constant pain, so that's why she has crazy mood swings. The life light is technically 'good', and she corrupted it by doing something awful (i'd rather not explain what is was, mostly because it doesn't matter anymore since she isn't how she used to be). Since it is corrupted, she is in pain all the time, and any physical touch from someone else hurts, and any strong emotion hurts as well (thats why her moods change quickly. If she keeps one emotion too long it gets more painful). So thats what the whole pain thing is, I didn't want people to be confused XD

Sarah was now seated in Dee's lap. The crack on Dee's chest that had been visible minutes before was now almost completely sealed up, spanning only half an inch long. Sarah poked at it curiously, wondering what the bright light was. It was pretty.

"Owch," Dee said, completely monotone. A small smile tugged at his lips. "What are you doing?"

"You've got a light in your coat," Sarah said, fixated. "Can I see it?"

"Another time perhaps," Dee answered, his attention turning to the conversation Nuke and Whitefire were having.

Zal-Tek smiled slightly at Dee and Sarah's short conversation. Dee seemed to like her company a great deal, and it was good that they were both happy and, well, alive. Though Sarah herself could pose a bit of a problem. Not to mention whatever was happening to Whitefire. He watched her for a moment, concerned, but, once again, he doubted he could do anything to help.

Whitefire looked back at everyone staring at her and was silent. The pain was keeping her from thinking of a good response,and she felt lightheaded.

Dee, still holding Sarah, stood up shakily, and eyed Whitefire with concern. He kept one hand on the tree behind him for support, as he was still feeling a little weak.

"If you believe you are going to faint," Dee said, "perhaps you should sit down."

"That is probably a good idea" Nuke agreed, making an invisible platform of solid air for her to sit on behind her. He wished he could do something, but he was starting to suspect magic being the problem and as such he was pretty useless.

Nodding in answer to Dee, but hardly understanding, Whitefire shakily lowered herself and found she could sit in mid-air. She placed her head in her hands, choking on her breath as another stab of pain racked her chest.

Dee set Sarah down and limped over to Whitefire. Sarah clung to his coat, not wanting to be put down, but understanding something important was going on. Dee knew Whitefire had helped him, and most likely saved his life. The least he could do was try to help her in return.

"With your permission," Dee said to Whitefire, "I would like to try to help you."

Whitefire stared at Dee for a moment, an agonized look in her eyes. "Are you sure you're up to it....?" Even though she felt like she was being ripped from the real world entirely, she still realised that he had been close to death minutes before. "...I don't....want you to hurt yourself."

"...if you would like to." Whitefire said quietly. If there was the possibility that he could help, she wasn't going to complain.

Dee nodded once, and took Whitefire's left hand with his left one. Immediately a white light became visible through his fingers, a sign that he was doing something. Hesitantly he placed his right hand on Whitefire's back, just below the base of her neck. A glow soon accompanied this as well. There was nothing physical to heal, Dee knew, but the pain was real.

After Dee placed his hand on her back, Whitefire relaxed visibly and closed her eyes, letting out a soft breath as she was relieved of pain completely.....something that never happened. Without saying anything, or even opening her eyes to look at him, the white cat quietly purred.

Nuke watched Dee work his magic on Whitefire, literally. He was just glad that he could help in some small way, even if it was providing the seat for the cat.
While he was contemplating this however, there was something else on his mind. We should get moving soon. This swamp is not a good place, and it can't be doing any good for either Whitefire anyway.

Unknowingly, Sarah agreed with Nuke's sentiments. She tugged at Dee's coat, trying to get his attention. "Dee," she said, "can we go home now?"

Dee looked down at her. "I daresay we can," he replied. "Do you know which way home is?"

"That way," the girl answered confidently, pointing out past her island and into the trees.

Cautiously Dee released Whitefire, and knelt down in front of Sarah. "That way?" he asked. "Are you sure?"

"Yes," stated the girl, unblinking.

As soon as Dee let go, the pain came back full force. Her purring abruptly stopped. "Dee-" she gasped breathlessly, and gritted her teeth. Body shaking from the pain that suddenly resumed, Whitefire looked at him, orange eyes wide.

Dee hurriedly stood up and resumed his position numbing Whitefire's pain. "I am sorry," he said quickly, mortified. "It would seem I must remain in physical contact with you for this to have any effect. Forgive me."

Whitefire breathed carefully for a few moments, waiting to be able to think again. "Sorry?" She took a second to breathe again. "It isn't your fault, Dee."

Zal-Tek watched Dee and Whitefire with interest. He wondered what was wrong with Whitefire, but he doubted she considered it any of his business. If he decided it was important, he could probably figure it out, but that would be rather impolite.

He looked down at Sarah, curious. She claimed to know where 'home' was. He supposed she could be the help they were supposed to get, but it was also possible that this 'home' was not the exit they were looking for. Though it wasn't as if they had any other leads...

Home. The word was a welcome one to Nuke. Perhaps the way home is closer than we thought he thought to himself. Although Whitefire was still in pain. He thought up a solution.
"If Sarah knows the way we can follow her, and perhaps if Dee was willing to hold Whitefire's hand, that could keep the pain under control"

Hold hands? Dee supposed that would work, though it was something he probably never would have suggested. He nodded, indicating his assent to the plan put forward.

"Can I hold hands too?" Sarah asked timidly, beaming up at Dee and Whitefire.

"If you wish."

Whitefire nodded, smiling ever so slighty. "Okay...sounds like a plan." She looked up at Dee with a sudden grin and hopped off Nuke's chair, her hand still grasping Dee's.

"Excellent. Perhaps this 'home' Sarah speaks of is our way out of this world and back to our own." Nuke smiled a little. Of course if it didn't, then it wouldn't be a huge surprise. he thought, although he decided it would not be very productive to focus on the negative outcomes at the moment.

Sarah grabbed Dee's other hand and pulled him forward, in turn pulling Whitefire. The girl giggled happily and began tugging them down a trail that only she seemed to be able to see.

A few minutes later, Sarah led the party to a set of wooden stairs that looked as if they'd been hastily made several centuries earlier. This staircase led up to a wooden walkway just below the canopy overhead. So thick were the trees below that one might have walked under it and never seen it. Too thick were the leaves above to see any landmarks.

"We just have to follow this now!" Sarah said excitedly.

Zal-Tek smiled slightly at Whitefire, Dee, and Sarah. Watching the three of them go down the path was certainly amusing. At least until they reached a slightly ominous staircase. He eyed it suspiciously, but decided he may as well continue up. Hopefully there was something less... Arranged... Up there. Unlikely, though.
